The Great Dance Festival of Zurmang

Historically there are three great festivals in Tibet:
(1) The Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa, Ü (Monlam Chenmo)
(2) The Great Dance Festival in Zurmang, Kham
(3) The Great Market in Gyadartse

The tradition of the Great Dance Festival of Zurmang:
The dance in general includes: (1) the dance of holding the earth which comes from the Vajra Tent Tantra, (2) the dance of offering from the Kalachakra Tantra, and (3) the great dance of the Zurmang Tsog. From among these three, the third, the Great Dance of the Tsog Offering of Great Bliss itself, has two versions, that from the long lineage and that from the close lineage.

The essence of the dance is the very nature of the union of bliss and emptiness and the two accumulations.

The purpose of the dance is to purify impaired and broken samaya, to increase lifespan, merit, and prosperity, to bring under one’s power all the excellences of samsara and nirvana, and to subjugate malicious forces.

The structure of the dance is as follows: First, there is adorning with the crown ornament, fastening the length of the hair tassel, donning the crown of the five Buddha families, adorning the three braids with the five colored silken pennants, the wheel of bones on the top on the head, the bone earrings on the ears, bangles on the wrists and ankles, a tiger skin on the lower body, six bone ornaments on the upper body, in the left hand a bell, in the right hand a damaru, hollow inside, with three levels of wooden rings, covered with the skin of a wild ass, joined with the sinews of a swan, with the sixty-two-fold mandala diagram, four silken tongues, eight clusters of cowrie shells, eight pieces of coral and thirty-two cowrie shells, etc. Having undertaken these steps, the dance in its 360 aspects are danced for one day and night.

The time of the dance is the the funeral ceremony of the superior Lord Marpa the Translator and on the principle of the four Buddhist holidays, the day of the 15th of the Month of Miracles, when the dance is exhibited in this manner at the Great Dance Festival in the Trayerma Assembly Hall of Zurmang Monastery, and is likewise exhibited at Mase Zurmang Dütsi Khyil, Zurmang Donang, and other branch monasteries of Zurmang at their respective locations.

By Phagchen on the 15th day of the first month of the fire male monkey year in the 17th Tibetan rabjung.

Please note this is a draft translation of the Tibetan below.
