Progress of restoration work due to Sikkim earthquake on 18/9/2011
- Details
Though life has now returned to normal for the monks, however your support to Lingdum to help strengthen and restore the structure back to its former state is still very much needed. As Buddhist, we all know that helping to build or support a temple helps to accumulate immeasurable amount of merits! Even if you do not believe in merits, it is still for a good cause. As the monks will have a proper, safer place to study, meditate and pray for world peace and unity! Thank you for your kind attention.

Sikkim suffered a 6.9 Richter scale major earthquake on 18th Sept 2011 and unfortunately, Lingdum Monastery is not spared. The structure was quite badly traumatised, though still standing but hopefully, there won't be any more aftershocks, otherwise the main Prayer Hall may collapse...as the big pillar is suffering from major cracks. The Retreat Centre, the monks'
kitchen, Rinpoche's room which is situated on top of the main Prayer Hall, the Guest House and some other areas in the monastery compound. At this point of time, it is still unclear how much would be needed to re-enforce or repair the damages. However, financial assistance is definitely needed to help solve the problem. Kindly contact the respective Zurmang Centres near you or you can email
Some people were asking, why do such unfortunate events happen to holy places? Well, the message from Karmapa is "May all those who are affected by this tragedy, find peace in their hearts, May they develop courage for themselves and for others to discover the nature of impermanence and by means of dedication and aspiration, transform their karma for the better"
As a Buddha Dharma follower and practitioner, maybe we can see this as an opportunity to generate more loving-kindness and compassion and practice our generosity, noting the nature of impermanence happening now and then.
The plans we are always making may or may not materialise due to forces beyond our control. Don't we feel humbled by all these happenings?
Thank you for your support.

Dear friends,
I just spoke to my cousin, cracks were every where ,inside and outside 1 the Monastery, 2. The Retreat center. 3. The guest house and 4. The big kitchen including, dining hall, the guest rooms for visiting lamas and others.
The biggest worries are; one of the main pillars inside the monastery is crack and the support wall for the kitchen is almost going to collapse.
Thank you for your support!
