You may wonder where you have reached in your dharma practice.
It is difficult to answer such a question since dharma practice is something that aims for inner attainments, which cannot be seen, but there are certain signs that might tell you about the level of your practice. For instance, after you begin to observe the teachings or advice you have received from your teachers, you will find that you are oriented more toward your practice rather than being led by the same old negative habits. One important outcome of putting the teachings into practice is a change in your attitudes towards others. For example, think about someone who made you angry or jealous in the past, and if you find that such destructive emotions have lessened, then you are definitely making progress. However, if even after embracing the dharma, your negative emotions have become stronger, then you should find the reason. In such a case, you should seek advice from your teachers because this is a sign that you are not properly applying the Buddha's teachings. In order to practice meaningfully and beneficially, it is important to give up ego and laziness. Otherwise, one will always remain in spiritual kindergarten. Thus, look within to understand what may be hindering the progress in your dharma practice and where there are opportunities for growth.
