Sakyong Offers First Sadhana of Mahamudra Abhisheka in Southeast Asia

April 1, 2005

Fulfilling one of the aspirations of Vidhyadhara, the venerable Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, that the dharma he brought to the West would one day betaught in Asia, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche bestowed the Sadhana of Mahamudra abhisheka on close students of Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche while on his recent visit to Singapore.

Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche is a holder of the Zurmang Kagyü lineage and will be familiar to senior students in the Shambhala mandala from his presence at the consecration of The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya in 2001.

The Sakyong also gave public meditation instruction and talks to coincide with publication of the Chinese-language edition of Turning the Mind into an Ally in this multicultural nation at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula. The events were generously hosted by students of Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche and by Lhatse Tulku, formerly of Namdroling monastery.

The abhisheka was given in the home of a senior student of Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche, which holds numerous shrines, rupas and religious artifacts, and in which offerings of 3,300 water bowls are made daily on behalf of the entire city of Singapore.
